Speaking Anxiety during MUET-CEFR Aligned Oral Presentations among ESL Learners in Perak

The newly enforced MUET-CEFR aligned format is one of the government’s efforts to upscale Malaysian learners’ English proficiency level be at par with international standards. However, learners are reported have high anxiety levels resulting in poor performance, especially speaking component. Hence, this study conducted investigate learner’s levels, factors causing anxiety, and strategies overcome during oral presentations among ESL Perak. survey research design employed for where a total 130 participants took part by answering three-section questionnaire on their background information, McCroskey’s Personal Report Public Speaking Anxiety (PRSPA), Nakatani’s Oral Communication Strategy Inventory (OCSI). Descriptive statistics used analyze data an independent sample t-test was differences strategy use based course types. A follow-up interview session classroom observation were also triangulation. findings indicated many possess moderately PRPSA scores. Meanwhile, responses OCSI implied that message reduction alteration most cope presentations. showed statistically significant difference between Diploma Form 6 students social affective, fluency-oriented, negotiation meaning while speaking, accuracy-oriented, alteration, non-verbal speaking. from suggest teachers should scaffold students' presentation skills manage better performance examination.
